Press Release
On March 24, 2009, the Black Coalition of Quebec issued a press release claiming an independent inquiry into the practices and administration of the police. The CSST report on the intervention of the police during the riot in Montreal North in August 2008 supports our request. In effect, the CSST identifies many weaknesses in the practices and administration of the police: “faulty planning, confusion by authorities, bad evaluation in risk taking”.
Once again, we are demanding that the government of Quebec and the city of Montreal don’t focus their attention only on Montreal North, but all over the province where there are cases of racial profiling, discrimination and exclusion of racial minorities and in particular the Black Community. The problem of Montreal-North is a problem everywhere, for this reason, on several occasions we asked for an investigation in police behaviour towards ordinary citizens.
We are also calling upon the Mayor of Montreal to withdraw the petition deposited two weeks ago declaring “Montreal a free Zone from racism”. We are demanding that the Mayor use his authority to assist in installing appropriate mechanisms to address acts of discrimination, racism and racial profiling in Montreal.
